Childrens Lunar New Year Celebration

My son and I took part today in the Childrens Lunar New Year Celebration at the Texas Asian Cultures Museum in Corpus Christi. The kids learned to fold paper into shapes (origami), made dragon masks and paper lanterns, watched children's dance troupes perform, and marched in a Chinese Dragon Parade. The woman leading the event told me that this time of year in China is a time when the work from harvest is done and planting hasn't begun, so the people find time for music, art and merriment.

Marsh Planting

Marsh Planting
My son Kai and I participated in a marsh planting event this weekend, organized by Coastal Bend Bays Foundation and the Coastal Bend Bays & Estuaries Program. We helped plant Spartina (a marine grass) on some new islands that the groups had built to create habitat for fish and birds in Nueces Bay, only a few miles north of our house on North Beach. Kai's favorite parts were the airboat ride and getting muddy.

Icy Day on North Beach

Schools were closed today due to the freeze that coated the Coastal Bend in ice, so I went out exploring the beach with my family and took some photos to show what Jack Frost had accomplished over night. It was fun watching it through the eyes of my five-year-old son who has never seen ice in his front yard.
